1940s

}
 

1941:

Robert Livingston Johnson was named Temple’s third president.

1942:

Temple became the first institution in the Delaware Valley to offer a master of science degree in business at night.

1947:

Henry Wycis, MED ’40 (MRES), and Professor Ernst Spiegel performed the first surgical stereoencephalotomy (minimally invasive brain surgery using an external, 3-dimensional frame of reference). The device they invented is now displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

1948:

Public radio station WRTI 90.1 FM was established. The station was fully licensed in 1953.

School of Medicine professors George Henny, W. Edward Chamberlain and R.B. Taft developed the electrokymograph, used in the early detection of heart disease.

1949:

School of Medicine Professor W. Edward Chamberlain designed the first biplane stereoscopic X-ray machine.
