1935:

The Temple football team played in the inaugural Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.

The Tyler School of Art was established. The school was named for Stella Elkins Tyler, who donated her estate to Temple University.

1936:

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt attended the dedication of the first library building, in Sullivan Hall, and was given an honorary degree.

1938:

The Temple men’s basketball team won the first-ever National Invitation Tournament, a feat they repeated in 1969.

W. Emory Burnett, professor of surgery, performed the first human pneumonectomy (lung removal) in Philadelphia.

1939:

O. Spurgeon English, chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and Professor Edward Weiss established the first clinic for psychosomatic medicine.
